Australia’s Science Channel publishes Deakin research into VR gamification of amblyopia treatment

Researchers from the Deakin School of Health and Deakin MotionLab are exploring virtual reality (VR) to treat amblyopia, sometimes known as lazy eye. Amblyopia is generally treated by wearing an eye patch over the stronger eye in an attempt to encourage the weak eye to develop better vision. Our new approach uses VR headsets that can manipulate the picture sent to each eye, creating a similar effect to that of an eye patch whilst allowing the user to play a game. Turning treatment into a game is likely to improve compliance.
